From hole-in-the-wall spots to trendy Instagrammable locations, there’s something for every taco lover.
Whether you are looking for classic TJ tacos, fish tacos with culinary eclectic toppings, or even vegan options, this guide highlights over 20 absolute best taco spots across the greater Sacramento area.

Tacos are a California Staple
Tacos aren’t just a food option in California; they are our most important food group. From beachside stands to neon-lit parking lot trucks, tacos are the ultimate equalizer that brings everyone together, whether you are grabbing a quick lunch between meetings or catching up with friends over a late-night plate of al pastor. The beauty of California taco culture is its sheer variety.
On any given day, you can get a hyper-traditional street taco on handmade corn tortillas or an innovative, globally inspired fusion creation, and both will be absolutely stellar. It is the kind of comfort food that defines how we eat out here—fresh and casual, but always delivers the flavor.

My Personal Agenda with Creating This Blog Post
I am a Sacramento local who grew up in Northern California. In every city I’ve lived in, I make it personal mission to scout out the best tacos. The exact type of taco varies by mood, sometimes I’m craving OG beef tacos, and other times I hear the calling of beer battered fish tacos. Either way, I’m the winner of a perfect dinner!
This list is a mix of my tried and true favorites that I visit frequently, and the others are taquerias I’ve heard about from other locals and are on my list to try. I actually was just recently invited on a taco food tour, which was the catalyst for creating this list. Several of the below restaurants were on the tour, and it gave me the chance to taste-test a variety of tacos from each restaurant. It was a tough job, but this foodie was up to the task. As always, I carry my camera with me to capture these beautiful tacos on my plate…. before I devour them! Ha!

Here’s My List of Top 20+ Standout Tacos in Sacramento
Nixtaco
Located just up the road in Roseville, Nixtaco holds a coveted Michelin Bib Gourmand, and it takes only one bite to understand why. The kitchen centers its entire menu around imported, heirloom Mexican corn, which they nixtamalize and mill in-house daily to create arguably the best corn tortillas in Northern California.
While the pork belly and brisket are fantastic, the seafood options shine brightest here. Pair your meal with an innovative cocktail from their full bar or a house-brewed beer.
Must-Try Taco: Mazatlán (Smoked pasilla pepper stuffed with shrimp and cheese)
Vibe: Elevated, craft-focused sit-down

Dos Coyotes Border Cafe
With multiple popular locations scattered throughout the Sacramento region, including East Sacramento and North Natomas, Dos Coyotes Border Cafe has been a regional favorite since it expanded out of Davis. They specialize in Southwestern-influenced approach to Mexican food, using bright, punchy flavor combinations.
While their standard tacos are fantastic, the real insider secret on the menu is the Sedona Taquitos (aka rolled tacos). This dish features four crisp corn tortillas rolled tightly with seasoned pulled chicken, then fried to a golden crunch. Served alongside generous scoops of fresh guacamole and sour cream for dipping.
If you prefer a traditional folded taco, the California Fish Tacos are a great menu option. They feature marinated seafood like mahi mahi or shrimp served on warm flour tortillas, piled high with a tangy agave-lime slaw, fresh avocado, and a sweet mango salsa. I was invited to a taco foodie tour on National Taco Day, and Dos Coyotes had a menu special – fresh salmon tacos! Scroll up to see the photos.
Don’t forget to pay a visit to their legendary, fully stocked salsa bar to customize your plate with everything from mild pico de gallo to fiery habanero blends.
Must-Try Taco: California Fish Tacos or Sedona Taquitos
Vibe: Lively, family-friendly Southwestern cafe

Zócalo
With an undeniable reputation for upscale dining, Zócalo has four highly popular locations in the Sac region, including the flagship spot in Midtown on Capitol Avenue. This local chain is known for its modern interior design and upscale environment, making it a go-to choice for date nights, celebration dinners, and weekend brunch.
While the extensive menu covers scratch-made entrees, their Baja Fish Tacos are widely known as a local favorite. The kitchen takes fresh fish fillets, covers them in a light, crispy Mexican beer batter, and fries them to a perfect golden hue. Wrapped in warm, Mi Rancho tortillas, they come piled high with crisp cabbage mix, fresh pico de gallo, and a generous drizzle of smoky, tangy chipotle aioli.
All taco plates are served alongside their famous, fragrant cilantro-lime rice and creamy black beans topped with cotija cheese.
*Note: Be sure to arrive early or make a reservation on the weekends, as their dining spaces and sunny patios fill up fast.
Must-Try Taco: Baja Fish Tacos

Pig Latin
Pig Latin brings a heavy dose of color, fun energy and modern pop design aesthetics in Elk Grove. If you’re ever looking for a spot to take cute photos and drink margaritas with your girlfriends, this is the one to book for a girls night.
We actually went to a World Cup watch party at Pig Latin, to watch the Mexico game (my husband is a big fan!). The restaurant was packed and everyone was very happy because Mexico won! See the video here.
The culinary team here does not play it safe, using playful Caribbean and Latin elements straight into their taco lineup. Their Quesabirria de Res is a standout crowd-pleaser, utilizing red-chile-rubbed chuck shoulder braised until it is melt-in-your-mouth tender, folded into a crispy corn tortilla with molten Queso Oaxaca, and finished with a dusting of salty cotija cheese.
If you want to branch out from beef, their Achiote Jerk Chicken taco is spectacular. It features deeply marinated, smoked, and grilled chicken thighs topped with a bright, crisp cabbage slaw and a subtle, warming habanero-thyme mayo.
Pro tip: if you can plan your visit around their Tuesday schedule, they offer phenomenal fifty-percent-off deals on all tacos alongside great discounts on single pours of premium tequila.
Must-Try Taco: Quesabirria de Res or Achiote Jerk Chicken
Vibe: Trendy, upscale taco and tequila lounge

El Burrito Taquería
With three locations across the Sacramento area, including Downtown on K Street, El Burrito Taquería is a personal favorite of mine. The causal vibes makes it very kid-friendly and chill for families.
While their namesake burritos are legendary, their recent dive into the quesabirria game is what has earned them a spot on this list. They take slow-braised, highly seasoned beef birria, stuff it into a corn tortilla alongside a generous amount of Monterey Jack cheese, and grill it until the cheese forms a perfect, lacy crust on the edges. Served with a side of rich, spiced consommé for dipping, it is an incredibly satisfying, savory bite available any day of the week.
Must-Try Taco: Quesabirria Tacos with Consommé
Vibe: Clean, fast-casual neighborhood counter

La Venadita
Nestled in the heart of Oak Park, La Venadita serves up contemporary Mexican fare in a bright, modern space. This neighborhood favorite focuses on scratch-made ingredients and responsibly sourced meats, striking a perfect balance between traditional methods and modern consumer demands.
Their carnitas are a masterclass in texture, boasting deeply savory and tender meat with perfectly crisped, caramelized edges. They also feature phenomenal vegetarian options, like a tangy, earthy taco made from braised hibiscus flowers.

Located in Midtown, 5 Tacos & Beers is the ultimate weekend destination for group gatherings. The modern space features an impressive array of local craft beer taps alongside a menu highlighting fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
They offer incredible food promotions throughout the week, including an all-you-can-eat taco buffet on Tuesdays and an endless quesabirria feast on Thursdays. It is an ideal spot to hang out with friends, enjoy live music, and sample creative fillings.
Must-Try Taco: Quesabirria or Mole Chicken
Vibe: High-energy, hip beer garden

Sal’s Tacos
Just across the river in West Sacramento, Sal’s Tacos stands out immediately thanks to its vibrant, mosaic-tiled exterior honoring icons like Frida Kahlo and the Sacramento Kings. Inside, you will find a beautifully maintained salsa bar and an incredibly welcoming community atmosphere.
Sal’s excels at classic, no-nonsense comfort food. Their meats are consistently lean and well-marinated, and their salsa verde is packed with sharp, bright tomatillo and cilantro flavors. It is also an excellent stop for early morning breakfast tacos.
Must-Try Taco: Al Pastor or Chorizo and Egg Breakfast Taco
Vibe: Art-filled, nostalgic neighborhood hub

Mas Taco Bar
If you are craving non-traditional, globally inspired flavors wrapped in a tortilla, Mas Taco Bar delivers perfectly. Created by the hospitality team behind several popular Sacramento concepts, Mas pushes boundaries at its R Street and Arden locations.
The menu reads like an international culinary tour, featuring ingredients like spicy gochujang, sweet mango salsa, and rich pork belly. Combine that with a selection of over 50 tequilas and a fantastic happy hour, and you have a perfect destination for a fun night out.
Must-Try Taco: Korean Fried Chicken or Braised Pork Belly
Vibe: Stylish, lively bar and restaurant

Taqueria Espinoza
Taqueria Espinoza is a quintessential hidden gem that locals fiercely protect. Tucked away into an unassuming storefront, this family-run kitchen focuses on delivering flawless execution of the basics.
The carne asada here is widely considered some of the finest in the city. It is meticulously trimmed, heavily seasoned, and seared on a scorching flat-top to lock in moisture while creating beautiful caramelized edges. There are no gimmicks here, just pure street taco perfection.
Must-Try Taco: Carne Asada
Vibe: Simple, classic counter-service taqueria
Niko’s Tacos
Another suburban standout that earned a national top-ten spot on Yelp’s recent rankings is Niko’s Tacos in Roseville. This family-operated restaurant has built an unshakeable reputation on pristine customer service and incredibly clean, bright flavors.
The fish tacos feature perfectly flaked white fish inside a light, non-greasy batter, topped with a crunchy cabbage slaw and a tangy chipotle crema.
Must-Try Taco: Carnitas or Baja Fish Taco
Vibe: Clean, welcoming suburban eatery

Tacos El Alebrije
Parked near Watt Avenue and Whitney Avenue, Tacos El Alebrije is a staple food truck for late-night food lovers. They focus heavily on Mexico City street food traditions, meaning the meats are deeply seasoned and cooked low and slow.
Their suadero (beef rose meat confit) is incredibly rich, with a texture that is simultaneously meltingly tender and crisped on the edges. The salsa line-up here is notoriously spicy, so test them carefully before adding a heap to your plate.
Must-Try Taco: Suadero or Lengua
Vibe: Late-night neighborhood food truck
West Coast Taco Bar
What started as a highly sought-after food truck has transitioned into a permanent home in Elk Grove. West Coast Taco Bar prides itself on creative, handcrafted tacos where every component is engineered for the perfect bite.
The culinary team plays with fun naming conventions and massive flavor profiles. Their tortillas are pressed fresh, providing a durable, sweet corn canvas that holds up beautifully against heavy fillings like grilled steak, succulent shrimp, and molten cheese.
Must-Try Taco: The “Gobernador” (Shrimp and steak surf-and-turf)
Vibe: Fun, modern, street-art inspired taqueria

Maya Traditional Mexican Cuisine
Situated on Broadway, Maya is widely celebrated for hosting one of the best value happy hours in the grid. It offers a wonderful sit-down experience with budget-friendly prices (the lunch special is Monday – Friday between 11am – 3pm). You can get two quesabirria tacos and a drink for $13!
While the standard street meats are top-tier, their shredded pork chile verde taco is a spectacular standout. The pork is simmered for hours in a bright, tart tomatillo and serrano broth until it absorbs all the heat and acid. It pairs beautifully with a cold draft beer.
Must-Try Taco: Chile Verde Taco
Vibe: Relaxed, colorful sit-down restaurant
Bambi Vegan Tacos
For a long time, plant-based tacos were treated as an afterthought, usually consisting of basic grilled vegetables or uninspired soy substitutes. Bambi Vegan Tacos in Midtown completely flipped that script by transforming whole vegetables into intensely savory masterpieces.
*Note: Bambi Tacos has permanently closed.
323 Tacos
Operating out of a pop-up kitchen on 4700 Madison Ave in Sacramento, 323 Tacos has built a fierce cult following for delivering highly authentic Tijuana-style street tacos. They focus on charcoal-grilled meats and heavy garnishes.
The carne asada benefits immensely from the open-flame char, giving it a distinct smoky depth that gas grills simply cannot replicate. Every taco comes standard with a thick smear guacamole, exactly how you would find them on the streets of Baja.
Must-Try Taco: Adobada or Carne Asada
Vibe: Low-key, high-energy taqueria

Tacos La Güera
If you look down the corner of Howe Avenue and Northrop Avenue on any given night, you’ll spot a massive line formed inside a smoky parking lot. That is Tacos La Güera, a nightly open-air street setup that brings genuine Southern California and Tijuana street-taco culture to Sacramento.
The centerpiece is a massive vertical rotisserie spit (trompo) topped with a juicy pineapple. The taquero deftly slices the marinated pork straight from the spit into a handmade corn tortilla, catching a flying piece of warm pineapple on top. The suadero (confit beef) is another exceptional choice here.
Must-Try Taco: Al Pastor (Slipped fresh off the trompo)
Vibe: Bustling outdoor street stand
Lalo’s Restaurant
For an authentic, family-style meal, head straight to Lalo’s near Sacramento City College. This beloved neighborhood staple is famous for its traditional Mexico City-style recipes and uncompromising flavors.
If you visit during the week, the crisp, meticulously cleaned tripas (tripe) and tender cabeza (beef head) are stellar. On weekends, the crowd pours in for the slow-cooked lamb barbacoa, which is incredibly rich, gamey, and meltingly tender. They serve it with a side of deeply savory consommé for dipping.
Must-Try Taco: Barbacoa (Available weekends) or Crispy Tripas
Vibe: Traditional, family-friendly diner

Chando’s Tacos
You cannot talk about the Sacramento food scene without mentioning Lisandro “Chando” Madrigal. What started as a humble walk-up stand on Arden Way has evolved into a local empire, yet the core quality remains remarkably consistent across locations.
The signature move here is watching the taqueros chop freshly grilled meats right in front of you. Every taco is served on a warm corn tortilla with fresh cilantro, diced onions, creamy guacamole, and their signature smoky salsa.
Must-Try Taco: Carne Asada or Al Pastor
Vibe: Casual, fast-paced walk-up
*Note: Some of the local Chando’s tacos have closed due to legal troubles of the owner.
Roundhouse Deli
Purists might scoff at a deli ranking high on a taco list, but Yelp’s national rankings placed Roundhouse Deli’s famous tri-tip taco at number four in the entire United States for a reason. With locations in Roseville, Sacramento, and Elk Grove, this spot bridges the gap between classic California backyard barbecue and Mexican comfort food.
They smoke their tri-tip over oak until it is incredibly tender, slice it thin, and pile it high into a corn tortilla that has been crisped up on the flat-top with a layer of melted Monterey Jack cheese. Top it with crisp lettuce and salsa, and you have a perfect cross-cultural bite.
Must-Try Taco: Smoked Tri-Tip Taco
Vibe: Casual neighborhood deli counter

Jimboy’s Tacos
We close our list with a legendary piece of Northern California history. While purists may debate if it really should be on this list, Jimboy’s Tacos is an undeniable cultural cornerstone of Sacramento food history. Founded in a small trailer at Lake Tahoe in 1954, it became a beloved local franchise that countless Sacramento know from their childhood.
The Jimboy’s style is completely unique. They take a corn tortilla, fill it with seasoned ground beef, fold it, fry it on a flat-top grill until it develops a signature crisp-yet-pliable texture, and dust the entire outside with a heavy coat of powdered Parmesan cheese. It is salty, greasy, nostalgic comfort food at its absolute finest.
Must-Try Taco: The Original Ground Beef Taco
Vibe: Nostalgic, fast-food style counter

Pro-Tips for the Ultimate Sacramento Taco Crawl
To get the absolute most out of your culinary exploration, keep these helpful insider tips in mind:
Cash is King
While almost all modern brick-and-mortar restaurants accept mobile payments and credit cards, some of the late-night street pop-ups and older neighborhood trucks still prefer cash. Keep a twenty-dollar bill tucked in your wallet just in case.
Follow the Trompo
If you are hunting for the best al pastor, always look for the vertical spit. If a kitchen scoops al pastor out of a metal warming tray on the steam table, it won’t have those signature crispy, caramelized edges that come from being sliced directly off the open flame.
Embrace the Off-Cut Meats
If you have only ever ordered chicken or steak, you are missing out on the incredible textures of traditional taquerias. Lengua (beef tongue) is incredibly tender and reminiscent of a high-quality pot roast, while well-fried tripas offer an amazing, potato-chip-like crunch.
Respect the Salsa Hierarchy
Always sample a tiny drop of the house salsa before drenching your plate. Many local spots pride themselves on authentic, un-diluted heat levels using fresh habanero, arbol, and chiltepin peppers that can catch you completely off guard.
Sacramento is Nacho Average Taco Spot
Forgive my cutesy pun, but I had to do it! In conclusion, Sacramento’s taco scene is a mix of authentic, foodie fusion trends and constantly evolving. Grab a few friends, pick a neighborhood, and start eating your way through the finest tacos the capital region has to offer.
