Yuba City Day Trip from Sacramento: Best Things to Do, See & Eat!
Looking for an easy and budget-friendly Northern California getaway that doesn’t require a hotel stay or hours of driving? A Yuba City day trip from Sacramento is one of the region’s most underrated adventures. Located just under an hour north of Sacramento, Yuba City offers a mix of local history, outdoor recreation, family-friendly attractions, and excellent international food.
During my years attending Chico State, we would drive down to Yuba City often for really good Indian food, shop the Indian market, see the wild chickens and overall just enjoy a change of scenery. Since my college days, the downtown area of Yuba has been revitalized and it’s got some new trendy spots we just discovered this past weekend.
Whether you’re planning a spontaneous weekend outing, a family day trip, or simply want to explore somewhere new, Yuba City makes for an enjoyable destination that often flies under the radar. Here’s how to spend the perfect day in Yuba City.
Where Is Yuba City?
Yuba City is located in Sutter County in Northern California, approximately 45 miles north of Sacramento. The drive typically takes between 50 minutes and 1 hour depending on traffic. Because of its close proximity to Sacramento, Yuba City is an ideal destination for a quick day trip.
The city sits along the Feather River and serves as an agricultural hub known for producing fresh farm-to-table produce. It is also home to one of the largest Sikh communities (they’re from India if you’re not familiar) in the United States, adding a unique cultural influence to the area.
Why Visit Yuba City?
While this blog post is going to provide you with a list of reasons to visit Yuba City, our little crew was specifically in the area to partake in falconry lessons at West Coast Falconry. Located just nearby in Marysville, after our morning with the birds of prey ended, we headed into Yuba for lunch and exploring.
Many people who live in Northern California have at least driven through Yuba City on the 99 Highway, most likely on their way up north to the mountains. Keep reading to see why this little city isn’t always just a “pass through” town, and is worth a dedicated visit.
Best Time of the Year to Visit Yuba City
The best time for a Yuba City day trip depends on your interests. If you live in Sacramento, the weather tends to be generally the same, possibly a little hotter in the summer.
Spring
Spring is arguably the most beautiful season. Temperatures are mild, flowers bloom, and nearby orchards come alive.
Fall
Fall offers comfortable weather and harvest-season charm. It’s an excellent time to enjoy local produce and outdoor activities.
Summer
Summer can be really hot, with temperatures frequently reaching the upper 90s and 100s. If visiting during summer, plan outdoor activities earlier in the day.
Winter
Winter is generally mild compared to many other regions and can be a pleasant time to explore museums, restaurants, and downtown attractions.
What is Yuba City Known For?
According to many Reddit threads I’ve just recently browsed, Yuba City is not necessarily a cool to hang out, and is known mostly as a place you live and leave to have fun. But I’m here to tell you that there are some hidden gems if you know where to look.
I’ll start with the chickens, yes, the wild chickens! Much like the islands of Hawaii, Yuba City has wild and free roaming chickens in its urban streets. Also, not to brag but Sacramento has wild and free roaming turkeys everywhere. But back to the Yuba chickens, we saw the hens with their baby chicks, along with colorful roosters crowing and clucking all over the parking lot near Kohls.
The second most well-known thing about Yuba City is their very authentic and full of flavor Indian cuisine. As someone who has actually traveled to India, Yuba City is the only other place where I have found the most Indian food variety. There are so many local Indian restaurants scattered all over town, it’s a foodie paradise!
Yuba City is a Budget-Friendly Destination in the Very Expensive State of California
During a time when everything feels expensive and overpriced, Yuba City remains a budget-friendly destination, especially in a state known for high travel costs. From affordable dining and free outdoor attractions to reasonably priced family activities, it’s possible to enjoy a fun day trip without spending a fortune, making it a great option for travelers looking to save money.

Okay, let’s get the list started! Yuba City is one of Northern California’s hidden gems, offering visitors a mix of local charm, outdoor recreation, and unique experiences. Sicilia Vineyards
Forget Napa Valley! You can enjoy a glass of wine in the Yuba Sutter Wine Valley. Attending an event at Sicilia Vineyards is a wonderful way to enjoy the scenic beauty of Yuba City’s wine country while sipping locally crafted wines. Adventure Alley at the Mall

Altitude Trampoline Park
Families in Yuba City have another exciting attraction to look forward to with Altitude Trampoline Park opening soon. Once open, the indoor entertainment center offers wall-to-wall trampolines, active play attractions, and year-round fun for kids, teens, and families.

Sutter Buttes Brewing

Dhaba Bur-roti’s and Bowls
Dhaba Bur-roti’s and Bowls puts a creative twist on Indian cuisine, serving flavorful burritos, rice bowls, and wraps filled with spices and popular ingredients like butter chicken, tikka masala, and tandoori meats. During our visit in Yuba City, we decided to try out Dhaba instead of a traditional India meal. To be very honest, it wasn’t my favorite Indian meal I’d ever had. I was a little bummed that we didn’t go to Star of India.
Lambert House Café
A local favorite for breakfast and lunch, Lambert House Café serves generous portions in a cozy historic setting in downtown Yuba City. Popular menu items include the sourdough pancakes, Cherry Pie Toast, Lambert Bennys (eggs benedict), homemade biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash, and French Dip Sliders, making it a great stop for comfort food and brunch favorites.
Dancing Tomato Caffé
Dancing Tomato Caffé is a longtime Yuba City favorite known for its fresh ingredients, creative menu, and welcoming atmosphere. Popular menu items include the Chicken Pesto Sandwich, Tomato Basil Soup, Tri-Tip Sandwich, Cobb Salad, and a variety of house-made desserts, making it a great choice for lunch or a casual dinner.
Coffee Shop and Boba in Yuba City
After we had lunch at Dhaba, right across the street was the My Boba Spot. One of the ladies in my group wanted to grab a drink, so we headed over. Inside we found the cutest little spot, and it had swings! Yes, swings inside the boba cafe.
Later on, during our walk downtown, we stopped into Full Circle Coffee House. This was probably my favorite spot of the whole day! The decor was super boho trendy and modern, they made me a cherry Italian soda, and the staff was so friendly!
Shopping in Yuba City
Whether you’re searching for unique finds, everyday essentials, or a little retail therapy, Yuba City offers a variety of shopping opportunities for visitors and locals alike.
Yuba Sutter Marketplace
Every city has your typical mall. For Yuba City their shopping hub is the Yuba Sutter Marketplace. It has your expected mall brands like American Eagle and Bath & Body Works, usual food court chains like Cinnabon and Panera Bread. There’s also indoor entertainment for kids, especially on hot or rainy days.
Sunsweet Growers Outlet Store
An outlet store for prunes?! Yep! Only in Yuba City. The well-known brand Sunsweet has a popular outlet store, selling more than just dried prunes. Visitors seem to especially love the Sunsweet Chocolate French Kisses (which is basically chocolate covered prunes). I’ve never tried them but I really want to stop by on my next visit to Yuba.
Indian Grocery Markets
One of my favorite past times during my college years was to come to Yuba City with friends and shop around the Indian food markets. I especially liked to find authentic Indian snacks, sweets and chai tea. They come in really unique and spicy flavors! If this sounds fun to you, stop by Flavors of India or Masala Market.
Outdoor Recreation Around the Yuba Area
Nature lovers will find plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the scenic landscapes, fresh air, and recreational activities found throughout the Yuba area.
Feather River
Some of the best places to enjoy the Feather River near Yuba City include the Feather River Parkway, Riverfront Park in nearby Marysville, and the levee trails that run alongside the river. These areas are popular for walking, biking, birdwatching, fishing, and taking in scenic views of the water and surrounding farmland. During the spring and fall, the river corridor is especially beautiful, making it a great spot for a leisurely stroll, family picnic, or sunset photography session.
Sutter Buttes
Known as the world’s smallest mountain range, the Sutter Buttes rise dramatically from the flat Sacramento Valley and are one of the most distinctive natural landmarks in Northern California. One of the best ways to see the Sutter Buttes is by taking a scenic drive along Highway 20, Pass Road, or South Butte Road, where you’ll find incredible viewpoints and photo opportunities.
For a closer look, guided hikes through Middle Mountain Interpretive Hikes provide access to privately owned areas of the buttes, allowing visitors to explore the unique landscape, wildlife, and history that make this hidden gem so special.
Johnson U-pick Farm
For a true taste of Yuba City’s agricultural roots, head to Johnson’s U-Pick Farm, where visitors can pick seasonal fruits straight from the orchard. Depending on the time of year, families can enjoy harvesting peaches, nectarines, plums, and other fresh produce while spending time outdoors. It’s a fun, hands-on experience that allows visitors to connect with local farming and take home some of the freshest fruit in the region.

Absolutely.
