River Fox Magical Christmas Train – A Whimsical Family Holiday Adventure

’Tis the season for cozy sweaters, hot cocoa, and making holiday memories — which is exactly what our family did on a recent holiday outing aboard the River Fox Train’s Magical Christmas Train. Located in West Sacramento, this annual event gives so many families the chance to experience holiday nostalgia in such a tangible way.

From the moment you park and board the vintage train, to the final glimpse of twinkling lights at Santa’s Village, your time aboard will be nothing short of magical.

A Little Bit of History – What Is the River Fox Magical Christmas Train?

The Magical Christmas Train is a seasonal holiday experience created by River Fox Train. It’s built on a heritage rail line once part of the old Sacramento Northern / Yolo Short Line — a historic route that today carries passengers through Yolo County countryside and riverfront scenery under new life as River Fox excursions.

Every holiday season — typically from late November through late December — the train is transformed into a moving winter wonderland. Inside, passengers are welcomed by holiday-themed decor, upbeat elves, carols, and sweet treats.

For families like ours, it’s not just a train ride — it’s a full-on festive adventure with storytelling, holiday activities, and even a stop at Santa’s Village at the end.

What to Expect During Your Train Ride

Arrival & Boarding

Plan to arrive about 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time — exactly as the instructions recommend. The free parking is right next to the station, which makes loading the kids and bundling everyone up quick and painless.

Once inside, the festive mood immediately greets you with twinkling lights, cheerful staff, and families dressed in cozy pajamas or holiday sweaters. We appreciated that seating was indoors and heated — very important for a comfortable ride during the winter months!

The Train Ride Begins

As the train pulls away, magic begins to unfold. The staff are cheerfully dressed as helpful Elves and lead carol sing-alongs and serving treats. Everyone with a ticket gets to enjoy a big cookie and a warm cup of hot cocoa. The mug became our little souvenir!

Not long after, Mrs. Claus makes her appearance and takes some time to chat with the kids and take photos. During the train ride, our kids especially love walking up and down the moving train cars and seeing all the views and festive decorations.

Santa’s Village, Meeting Santa & Final Moments

When it’s time to disembark, you’ll find yourself in a sparkling Santa’s village. They have faux snow machines blowing “snowflakes” in the air (I believe they are actually made of soap). Playing in the pretend snow was definitely a highlight for the kids!

Of course no Christmas experience would be complete without the chance to sit on Santa’s lap. Inside a warm tent you’ll find Santa Claus waiting to meet the kids.

Before leaving, make sure to stop by the gift shop. They have cute train-themed toys, hats, books, and other souvenirs — perfect for a family memento or a little “something” under the tree.

Why We Loved It — And Who It’s Best For

Perfect for Families with Kids

The mix of interactive carols, so many festively decorated train cars, hot cocoa, cookies, and a Santa visit transforms the train ride into an immersive holiday experience that kids won’t soon forget.

A Surprisingly Fun Date Night

During our ride, we did see some cute couples out on a date. The train does serve adult alcoholic beverages for those interested. It can be fun for grown-ups to enjoy a night of holiday whimsy!

Relaxed, No-Stress Holiday Vibes

Compared to holiday events that require tons of logistics (crowds, long lines, check-in chaos), the Magical Christmas Train felt smooth: easy parking, indoor seating, and organized boarding.

Beautiful Balance of Nostalgia and Magic

The vintage-rail charm + festive decor + holiday energy gave adults and kids alike a sense of wonder — like reliving a classic Christmas movie.

Keepsakes and Memories

From souvenir mugs to Santa-photos — we left not just with happy memories but tangible reminders of a special evening.

Great for Locals and Short Drives Away

Since we’re based in Sacramento, it was easy to drive there after school/day plans — no crazy travel needed. For those who live in great outskirts of the Sacramento area, it’s definitely worth the drive!

For families who love holiday tradition, trains, cozy winter fun, or making magical memories with kids — this outing is a winner.

What to Know Before You Go – Tips & Considerations

Book Early!

This event is popular, and seats go fast. It’s smart to reserve ahead to get the date/time you want.

Arrive 30 Minutes Before Departure

Parking and boarding are smoothest when you give yourself a little extra time.

Dress in Warm Layers

While the indoor cars are heated, temperatures can vary — especially if you’re moving between cars or outside in Santa’s Village.

Eat Lunch/Dinner Before You Arrive

You and your kids will be enjoying sweet treats on the ride, but they are definitely not serving a proper meal. To avoid any hangry situation, make sure you arrive with full bellies.

Bring a Camera + Festive Spirit

There are so many moments — Santa visits, holiday decor, glowing village lights — you’ll want photos and plenty of cheer.

  • Tickets are sold online only — go to the “Book Now” page on the River Fox Train website and select your date/time slot.
  • Once you choose your date/time and number of passengers, you complete payment with a credit or debit card.

Ticket prices for the Magical Christmas Train typically range from about $59 to $75 per person, depending on the date and time you choose. Most standard seats for adults and children ages 3 and up are around $64.75, while infants ages 2 and under can ride for about $11.88 when seated on a parent’s lap. Every ticket includes the full one-hour round-trip experience, plus hot cocoa, a souvenir mug, a cookie, and a festive lineup of onboard entertainment with elves, music, storytelling, and a visit from Santa. Prices can vary slightly each season, so it’s a good idea to check the River Fox Train website early and book ahead — especially for popular weekend or evening departures.

Wrapping It Up (Like a Christmas Present!)

What stands out most about our ride on the Magical Christmas Train isn’t just the hot cocoa or Santa photos (though those are wonderful). It’s the way everything is thoughtfully designed to bring families together. It all reminded me of the simplest and most meaningful parts of the holiday season: togetherness, wonder, and a little bit of magic.

In a world where holidays can get rushed or over-scheduled, this experience felt slow and intentional. It turned an ordinary evening into something special, grounding us in the now and giving my kids a memory they’ll likely treasure for years.

If you’re looking for a holiday outing that blends nostalgia, community, and kid-friendly magic — especially if you’re somewhere around Sacramento — I can’t recommend the Magical Christmas Train enough. Book your tickets, put on your pajamas or comfiest holiday sweater, and get ready to make memories that sparkle.
